Welcome
It has been said that Jazz is the only indigenous art form in America. The culture and art form has grown for generations in the fertile neighborhoods of New Orleans and enjoyed throughout the world. After 18 months of surviving in the aftermath, a cry has come from deep within our fellow Americans – to protect, preserve and nurture that which has been a gift for so many for so long.
Much has been said about Katrina and Rita and the damage they left behind. Jazz Dreams & New Orleans is focused on the future of New Orleans and the unmet need to support cultural continuity through the generation of rebuilding. The project supports musicians and music education in New Orleans and will not only draw people back to the city but will significantly revitalize the school system there. The $12 million dollar venture will create music education programs for youth while supporting job opportunities that will have an impact for generations.
This project is crucial to ensure that while New Orleans rebuilds its infrastructure it does not lose its soul – the rhythms and traditions passed from generation to generation for hundreds of years. The project will support customized music education programs in 60% of the current New Orleans’ schools, public, private and charter. Each school’s program will be led by a master musician through the support of a multi-year capacity building grant and the efforts of a consortium of non-profits. The project has wide-spread support within New Orleans, the multiple school organizations that exist within the city’s borders and the city’s policy makers.
You can join the movement to support culture through two important and critical ways. Financial resources are needed but so are musical instruments and your passion. See the Lend Your Support section for more information.
